Belcanto in all its glory
Galina Gotesman (Thornhill, ON) 4/2/2017 1:12 AM
This is a lesser known of Donizetti operas. The story is rather silly, reminiscent of I Puritani. The heroine thinks she has been betrayed, loses her mind temporarily and finds sanity and eternal love to the delight of everyone in the last act. The potential villain turns out to be a loveable funny character providing a much needed comic relief. But... what a score! It needs singers of Damrau and Florez calibre to make the story believable and in this production they accomplish it admirably. The picture is crystal clear, the sound is wonderful and the singing is simply glorious. Both principles and the rest of the cast sound terrific, the sets and costumes are attractive. High praise to Diana Damrau and Juan Diegi Florez for delivering truly inspired, emotionally charged performances of this difficult music . A real treasure for any bel canto and Donizetti fan Highly recommended.
Nearly Perfect

What a great performance! Florez and Damrau maintain the magic of their Met Le Comte Ory with splended vocalism. This is one of Donizetti's beast, but less well known operas and this flawless disc is a welcome addition to the opera shelves. One negative thing is that the overture was cut.

An easy DVD to rate as 5 star. Picture and voices/sound are very good. My only proviso being that sometimes the orchestra seems a little over-loud, though only briefly each time. Diana Damrau puts a lot of feeling into Linda's role. The action has been updated, but not overly, and it works well. This is an opera full of wonderful music. Three hours of great arias, duets, etc. - one following the other.
