Bel Canto Fan

An opera that I have always liked but have found hard to get on a good DVD. I have the commercially released one which is a strange mix of modern and old and which has a poor soprano. This one is preferable in all ways. It is a modern dress production, but the scenery puts it back into Roman days. It worked for me! Picture and sound are very good, as are the voices generally. Again, the soprano is a little hard in her higher notes but is fine in her lower register Overall, a very enjoyable production.

Great singing

ruined by an updated production, complete with Nazi uniforms and ugly set. It would have been better with togas. Ana Maria Martinez and Fabiano were excellent. Ensemble singing excellent.

More rare Donizetti
John Hearne (Wood green, London) 9/28/2015 8:02 AM
This is not quite the British Premiere... I saw it in London in the late 60's in an excellent semiprofessional production. This one is (as usual) updated but it works the music is excellent It was a favourite opera of Verdi's he recommended that it should be done if the singers for a performance of one of his operas were not available. He definitely knew it well...there are obvious parallels in the ends of the second acts of this and Aida! The singing and the playing are excellent as is the picture and sound Enjoy it.

Unmissable music!

This has long been a favourite opera of mine, so full of tunes yet so long neglected by all except in Italy. This is the original Italian version - much more compact and dramatic than the lengthy flaccid French revision Les Martys (apologies to Opera Rara!). Visually this production is rather disappointing but musically it is an exciting tour de force. The soloists, chorus and orchestra are sensational! The conductor whips them into a frenzy in the sestet, Act 2 finale and the final duet. If you don't know this opera then you are in for a treat. Glyndebourne musical standards at their finest and the audience justifiably take the roof off at the curtain calls!
