HAPPY BIRTHDAY, REGINA RESNIK!

To celebrate Regina Resnik's birthday on August 30, we are featuring a few of her very special and rare recordings.
This compilation spans the breadth of Resnik's long and varied career. She made her debut as Leonora in Verdi's Il trovatore in 1944, replacing an indisposed Zinka Milanov. For the first ten years of her career, she sang the most difficult dramatic soprano roles including Aida, Donna Anna, Sieglinde, La Gioconda, Leonore in Fidelio and Verdi's Lady Macbeth. From 1953 - 1955 she retrained her voice was a mezzo-soprano and began singing Amneris, Klytämnestra, Marina, Carmen, Eboli and Fricka among others.
This album begins in the soprano years and includes elegant, impassioned performances of Lia's Aria from L'enfant prodigue and a rarity from Gounod's La Reine de Seba. From her soprano years, we also hear a secure and thrilling "Ernani, involami," and exciting, full-blooded readings of "La mamma morta" and "Voi lo sapete." A special treat is the aria, "Ebbene, si, so tutto" from Leoncavallo's rarely heard Zazà. The selections from the mezzo repertoire show Resnik at as the mature, consummate artist she is remembered to be. Resnik sang Marina in Boris Godunov in both Russian and English; here, Marina's aria is sung in English, as it was presented at the MET for many years. The scenes from Don Carlo and Aida are magnificent, with Resnik holding nothing back in showing Eboli's rage and Amneris' desperation. The album includes two selections from Die Walküre, the first with Resnik as Sieglinde while in the second she sings Fricka, a role she was superlative in.
